Types of blood donation
THERE are two ways you can donate blood:
1. Whole blood
This is the type of blood donation you usually see during mobile blood donation drives or campaigns. Through this type of donation, you donate all the components in your blood: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma in a procedure that lasts seven to 10 minutes. The volume of blood you donate depends on your body weight and can range from 300ml to 500ml.

The blood collected through this method will be separated into its components later to be used for patients who need emergency transfusions (accidents), are undergoing surgery, or have chronic diseases that need blood transfusions (eg. thalassaemia, leukaemia, cancer, and even renal failure).
2. Apheresis
If you wish to donate only your plasma (plasmapheresis) or platelets (plateletpheresis), or both, you can do so in selected hospitals and blood banks. However, this option is only available for those who are above 55kg and have already donated whole blood at least twice (with the last donation not more than six months before undergoing apheresis). The procedure would take about one to two hours.
With this technique, your blood will be allowed to flow into an apheresis machine that isolates the components you wish to donate, and returns the rest of your blood into your body.
