Arrival of Tamil New Year offers prosperous outlook for nation

KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 13: The arrival of the ‘Manmatha’ Tamil New Year tomorrow is expected to shower happiness as well as offer a new beginning for the Indian community, said the Malaysian Hindu Sangam.

Malaysian Hindu Sangam president Datuk R.S. Mohan Shan said the arrival of the “Manmatha” new year or also known as “Chittirai Puthandu” promises an extraordinary transformation to Malaysia.
“Manmatha” which means “Extraordinary” and, the new year will bring extraordinary transformation to all communities in the country and marks a new beginning for the Indian community after going through many challenges, he told Bernama today.
He said this extraordinary year will also bring success for the Hindu community under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who has given allocations for many Hindu Non-Governmental organisations, especially the Malaysia Hindu Sangam for the implementation of programmes for the betterment of the community.
“We only started receiving allocations after Najib became the prime minister, so my hope for this new year is that the Indian community will enjoy more national development under him (Najib),” he said
Mohan also urged the Malaysian Hindu community to give more attention to the importance of lives and religion during this celebration.
Tamil people around the world celebrate Tamil new year on April 14, which marks the birth of the Chittirai month.    
The celebration, which is considered holy and joyous, is observed every year on the first day of the Tamil solar calendar and this year is known as “Manmatha.”     
The 60 year cycle comes by five revolutions of Jupiter and two revolutions of Saturn.   
The day is marked with a feast in homes and entrances to the houses are decorated elaborately with kolam and traditional vegetarian food is served. – BERNAMA
